Lionel W. Sorenson, MD (In Memoriam, 1927 - 2024)

A pioneer Bay Area ophthalmologist, Dr. Lionel Sorenson fostered a tradition of service in the East Bay for nearly 70 years. After working solo for a few years in Berkeley, he partnered with Owen Dickson in 1956 and worked uninterrupted until March 17, 2020. He served as Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at UCSF, President of the Alta Bates Medical Center Staff, and participated actively in Berkeley Rotary for 45 years. He was one of the first regional ophthalmologists to offer Argon Laser therapy for Diabetic Retinopathy and other retinal diseases and was a pioneer in cataract surgical implants.

Robert L. Sorenson, MD

Dr. Robert Sorenson is a comprehensive ophthalmologist, with a special interest in cataract surgery. Following his residency training at California Pacific Medical Center, Dr. Sorenson completed a one-year fellowship in medical retina, also at CPMC. He began practice in Berkeley with his father in 1984. He has been active in Berkeley Rotary since 1986. In 1987, he began making regular trips to the Hospital de la Familia in Nuevo Progreso, Guatemala, where his teams provide eye care and surgery to local residents. He continues to provide local leadership to the Hospital de la Familia Foundation.

Andrew L. Sorenson, MD

 Dr. Andrew Sorenson specializes in LASIK and refractive surgery, corneal transplantation and cataract surgery. Following his residency training at California Pacific Medical Center, Dr. Sorenson completed a one-year fellowship in refractive and corneal surgery at Duke University Eye Center. Dr. Sorenson is Medical Director of the U.C. Berkeley School of Optometry Refractive Surgery Center, Chief of Ophthalmology at Alta Bates Medical Center, Chair of Refractive Surgery for the CPMC Ophthalmology Residency and a member of the Executive Committee for Hospital de la Familia Foundation

Rebecca Sorenson Janik, MD

Dr. Rebecca Sorenson Janik is a comprehensive ophthalmologist and cataract surgeon.  She completed her residency training in 2016 at Penn State Eye Center, where she served as Chief Resident in her final year.  She received her medical degree from University of Illinois College of Medicine and her bachelor’s degree from Stanford University.  She is a diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. She also enjoys mentoring pre-medical undergraduate students at UC Berkeley and volunteering with the Hospital de la Familia Foundation. Dr. Janik is privileged to follow her grandfather, father and uncle as a third-generation member of the Sorenson Vision practice.


Optometrists

Jamie Stonick, OD

Dr. Jamie Stonick graduated from The New England School of Optometry in Boston in 2003. She completed a residency in Ocular Disease and Primary Care at U.C. Berkeley from 2003-2004 and obtained her Glaucoma Certification in 2005. She joined our practice in 2008. Dr. Stonick lives with her husband in Oakland and enjoys hiking, camping and traveling in her free time. 

 

Olivia Burger, OD

Dr. Olivia Burger graduated from The Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 2022 with Advanced Studies in Contact Lenses. She then completed a residency in Primary Care Optometry and Cornea and Contact Lenses at the UC Berkeley School of Optometry in 2022-2023. Originally from Erie, Pennsylvania, she is enjoying exploring California and making this her new home. In her spare time, she is a freelance concert photographer and enjoys attending live music concerts and festivals. 

Salwa Saleh, OD

Dr. Salwa Saleh completed her undergraduate degree in psycho-biology at UC Davis in 2017 and went on to graduate from the Southern California College of Optometry in 2021. She has been working in the ophthalmology modality of eye care since she was a student in optometry school, and holds great interest in ocular diseases of the anterior/posterior segment, peri-operative care surrounding eye surgeries, and glaucoma management. Dr. Saleh is a Bay Area native and is a 1x marathon/4x half-marathoner. Alongside long-distance running, she loves snowboarding with her husband, drinking coffee, and spending time with her niece and nephews.
